In modern day rural Japan, the Yokoyama family come together to commemorate the tragic death of eldest son Junpei, who died fifteen years ago while rescuing a boy from drowning. Over the course of one beautiful summer's day, food is prepared, old stories are retold, new relatives become acquainted and an elegant graveside ritual takes place. But not all is well in the family ranks. Second son Ryota dislikes these reunions, in part because of the manner in which Junpei was always favoured by his father and his parents' lingering belief that the wrong son died that day.
The latest film film from acclaimed filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, the director of Maborosi / Maboroshi no hikari (1995), Nobody Knows / Dare mo shiranai (2004) and the fabulous After Life / Wandâfuru raifu (1998) is a deeply felt drama of Japanese middle class family mores and manners that has met with widespread acclaim and been compared to the "home dramas" of the great Yasujiro Ozu.
Still Walking / Aruitemo aruitemo will be released on UK DVD on 25th May 2010 by New Wave Films at the RRP of £15.99. Included as an extra feature is a making-of documentary (29 mins). |
