Dumbland and LYNCH (one) in June

13 May 2009

Fans of the work of maverick director David Lynch can start wearing expressions of excited anticipation at the news that two new Lynch-related titles are to be released on UK DVD at the end of this month by Scanbox, the first a rare documentary portrait of the director at work entitled LYNCH (one), the second a collection of his short animated series Dumbland.

David Lynch's much-discussed but relatively little-seen animated short series Dumbland finally gets a UK DVD release in June and it's every bit as weird, funny, profane and provocative as you would expect from the man responsible for Eraserhead, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive.

Dumbland consists of eight animated vignettes written, directed, voiced and animated by Lynch himself (he also composed and performed the show's music) originally produced as exclusive content for his official website. Described by the director as "a crude, stupid, violent and absurd series," the episodes revolve around the day-to-day life of Randy, a boorish, impatient and violently tempered man, his constantly shrieking wife (or is she?) and their bizarrely nondescript child with a hilarious penchant for repetition, Sparky.

In The Neighbor, Randy admires his neighbour's shed while becoming increasingly verbally abusive to the man who eventually confesses to being a "one-armed duck-fucker." The Treadmill sees our hero attempting – and failing disastrously – to destroy his wife's noisy exercising machine, while in The Doctor he fares no better after electrocuting himself as he attempts to mend a broken lamp. Subsequent episodes feature Randy reminiscing with his pal about killing things (A Friend Visits), attempting to remove a stick from a stranger's mouth (Get The Stick), dealing with another monotonous day around the house (My Teeth Are Bleeding), looking after a sick relative (Uncle Bob) and going head-to-head with a swarm of ants who submit him to gleeful musical taunts of "asshole, shithead, dumb-turd."

Drawn in the crude style of Lynch's weekly comic strip The Angriest Dog In The World, Dumbland may be absurdist and deliberately low-brow in nature but it is also very funny and will delight fans of the director's more "out there" works.

David Lynch's Dumbland (cert. 15) will be released on DVD by Scanbox Entertainment on 8th June 2009 at the RRP of £15.99.

Over the course of two years, beginning as director David Lynch started working on a project that would eventually become Inland Empire, a small documentary crew was allowed to follow the director during his day-to-day business on location and at home. The result was LYNCH (one), an intimate portrait of the director's creative process, coming to UK DVD in June.

LYNCH (one) provides a fascinating insight into the creative mind of one of cinema's most original and interesting filmmakers. The journey starts at the end of 2004 as David visits Lodz, Poland to commence work on Inland Empire and to take a series of photographs of abandoned factories before returning home to Los Angeles for seven months' work on the film. Further visits to Lodz, to New York and his eventual return to Los Angeles are also documented as he candidly discusses subjects such as his abandonment of celluloid in favour of digital media and his interest in transcendental meditation, as he prepares "weather reports" for his website and works on his paintings. The film witnesses, at first hand, his discovery of the beauty in ideas and leads to a journey through the abstract which ultimately unveils David Lynch's unique cinematic vision.

Given Lynch's usual reluctance to discuss the subjects and themes of his films, LYNCH (one) is possibly the closest fans will ever get to a "making of" documentary, in this instance, the making of Inland Empire. Compiled from over two years of footage, LYNCH (one) provides the only current perspective on one of modern cinema's greatest directors, bringing to life his creative process and joy for living life to its fullest potential. As such, LYNCH (one) has to be considered essential viewing for David Lynch fans and general cineastes alike.

LYNCH (one) (cert. E) will be released on UK DVD by Scanbox Entertainment on 22nd June 2009 at the RRP of £15.99. Special Features include:
