In celebration of its 80th anniversary, StudioCanal has announced a brand-new restoration of the chilling Ealing Studios British horror classic Dead of Night on 4K UHD for the first time and on digital in October. Uniting the talents of esteemed directors Alberto Cavalcanti (Went The Day Well?), Charles Crichton (The Lavender Hill Mob), Basil Dearden (The Man Who Haunted Himself) and Robert Hamer (Kind Hearts & Coronets) and with an all-star cast including Ealing regulars Michael Redgrave (The Night My Number Came Up), Googie Withers (It Always Rains on Sunday, Pink String & Sealing Wax) and Mervyn Johns (The Halfway House), Dead of Night is widely regarded as one of the most influential horror anthologies ever made. By weaving together a series of psychological horror tales, the film helped define a new horror genre and its impact and influence remains timeless. Ground-breaking in its exploration of psychological horror as opposed to jump scares, the film helped define a new horror genre and its impact endures to this day, many current filmmakers still cite it as a major influence.
When Walter Craig (Mervyn Johns) visits a country house, he finds himself trapped in his recurring nightmare that involves the manor’s guests sharing their experiences with the supernatural. With each bizarre tale told, whether it be about a haunted mirror, or a ventriloquist tormented by his dummy, Craig hurtles closer and closer to the nightmare’s end, where he knows something awful will happen…
