The Boy and The Heron (Kimitachi wa dō ikiru ka, 2023) became the first Studio Ghibli film to have an IMAX release, a major first for the celebrated animation studio. The critically-acclaimed film was the first new work from Miyazaki Hayao in ten years, following his 2013 feature, The Wind Rises (Kaze tachinu), and was a decade in the making. The beautiful, hand-drawn, original story was written and directed by Miyazaki. Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from Miyazaki's long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The theme song for the film Spinning Globe was written and performed by global J-pop superstar Kenshi Yonezu.
The English language dubbed version of the film features the voices of Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari, Amsterdam, The Pale Blue Eye), Dave Bautista (Dune, Guardians of the Galaxy), Gemma Chan (The Creator, Eternals, Crazy Rich Asians), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate, The Florida Project), Karen Fukuhara (The Boys, Suicide Squad), Mark Hamill (The Machine, House of Usher), Robert Pattinson (The Batman, Tenet, the upcoming Mickey 17), and Florence Pugh (Oppenheimer, Black Widow, Little Women). Luca Padovan plays Mahito Maki, and Mamoudou Athie, Tony Revolori, and Dan Stevens are featured as the Parakeets. Both OV Japanese and English dubbed versions will be included in the Home Entertainment release.
The Boy and the Heron will be released on UK Digital on 16 September 2024, and on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD on 23 September 2024,
The film will also be released on 4K UHD Limited Edition Steelbook on 7 October 2024.
