Isaac Julien’s groundbreaking inner-city murder mystery, starring Valentine Nonyela, Mo Sesay, Dorian Healy, and Sophie Okonedo, explores London subcultures of the late 1970s. In August it comes to Blu-ray for the first time, newly remastered in 2K by the BFI, following selected theatrical screenings earlier this year and coinciding with the closing weeks of Isaac Julien’s exhibition, ‘What Freedom is to Me’ at Tate Britain.

Pirate radio hosts Caz and Chris decide to investigate the death of their friend, who was killed while cruising in a local park. In doing so, they must navigate suspicion from the police and bigotry in their own community. With characters and soundtracks oscillating between ’70s soul pirate radio, dancehall culture, National Front skirmishes and the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, Julien’s debut feature exploring contemporary British identity has lost none of its power or resonance.

Described by Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian as a film that "still feels fresh, buoyant, likable and emotionally open" and that has "a life-giving pulse of energy," Young Sould Rebels (1991) will be released on Blu-ray by the BFI on 7 August 2023 at the RRP of £19.99.
