Eureka announces its February and March 2018 releases

30 November 2017

Eureka’s February and March 2018 release schedules have been confirmed today, and are set to include a four entries to The Masters of Cinema Series and three additions to the Montage Pictures range of World Cinema releases.

Michael Blu-ray pack shot

February sees the world exclusive extras-laden Blu-ray release of a new 2K restoration of Carl Th. Dreyer’s compelling silent romantic drama Michael – an important early work in gay cinema. Based on Herman Bang’s 1902 novel of the same name, Dreyer’s film is a fascinating fin-de-siècle study of a “decadent” elderly artist (Benjamin Christensen) driven to despair by his relationship with his young protégé and former model, Michael (Walter Slezak). Michael will be released as part of The Masters of Cinema Series on 12 February 2018.

House Blu-ray pack shot

Also getting a Blu-ray upgrade on 12 February as part of The Masters of Cinema Series will be House, a self-aware, post-modern Japanese fairy tale from one of cinema’s great surrealists. A rollercoaster ride without brakes, House is by turns hilarious, sinister, and unexpectedly lyrical, with ceaseless cinematic invention and a satirical, full-blooded approach to the horror genre. A gigantic smash on its original release in Japan, Eureka is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.

The Housemaid Blu-ray pack shot

First-time director Derek Nguyen makes a captivating debut with The Housemaid [Cô Haû Gaí], a haunting gothic romance which blends bold eroticism with a pervasive sense of dread. With its sumptuous visuals and memorable scares, The Housemaid is a bold update of the gothic-horror genre, which will debut on home video as part of the Montage Pictures range on 19 Feb 2018.

Strangled Blu-ray pack shot

Based on real-life events, Strangled is set in the provincial Hungary of the 1960s at the height of socialism, when a series of atrocious murders shock the small town of Martfű. Winner of nine Hungarian Film Awards, Strangled is a dark and gritty thriller from Árpád Sopsits that brings to mind both Lang’s M and Fincher’s Zodiac in its approach to the murder-mystery genre. Strangled is set to be released in a Dual Format edition as part of the Montage Pictures range of titles on 5 Feb 2018.

Legend of the Mountain Blu-ray pack shot

Heading up the March line-up is Legend of the Mountain, the beautifully restored directors’ cut of a King Hu masterpiece. Adapted from a Song Dynasty folk tale, Legend of the Mountain exemplifies King Hu’s masterful command of spectacular visuals and philosophical insights into life and existence. Heavily edited upon release, the film has now been fully restored to its original length in stunning 4K, and The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film for the first time ever on home video in the UK, in a special Dual Format edition from 19 March 2018.

The Barefoot Contessa Blu-ray pack shot

The Barefoot Contessa, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner, will be released for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray as part of The Masters of Cinema Series on 12 March 2018. A high point in the already success-laden career of writer-director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and one of the most glamorous and extravagant films from Hollywood’s Golden Age, The Barefoot Contessa is a tragic drama about the tumultuous rise and fall of fictional Hollywood actress Maria Vargas. Also featuring Edmund O’Brien in an Oscar winning role as a duplicitous publicist, and featuring cinematography from the legendary Jack Cardiff, The Barefoot Contessa was a massive success upon its original release.

Re:Born poster

Re:Born, a breath-taking, no-frills martial arts film featuring fast, furious and expertly choreographed fight sequences and starring Tak ∴ (formerly Tak Sakaguchi), will be released for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK in a Dual Format edition on 12 March 2018. Utilising an unorthodox form of close-quarters combat (referred to by the director and lead actor as “Zero Range Combat”) Re:Born features some of the most stunningly choreographed martial-arts fight sequences in recent years.

Shirley: Visions of Reality

Last but not least for March, Shirley: Visions of Reality, a dream-like recreation of the works of artist Edward Hopper, will be released as part of the Montage Pictures range in a Dual Format edition on 19 March 2018. Austrian filmmaker, architect and experimental artist Gustav Deutsch reproduces 13 of American painter Edward Hopper’s oil paintings on film, connecting them through the fictitious story of a red-haired New York actress through the years 1931-63. Presented as a series of nearly static tableaux’s, with stunning cinematography from Jerzy Palacz, Shirley: Visions of Reality is an experimental tour-de-force.
