The Luck of a Sailor & Street of Shadows on DVD in May

26 April 2016

Network have announced the next two DVD titles to be released as part of 'The British Film' collection: The Luck of a Sailor, which stars David Manners in his British film debut opposite Greta Nissen and Camilla Horn; and Street of Shadows, a noir thriller from the early 1950s starring Cesar Romero and Kay Kendall.

The Luck of the Sailor (1934)

On an undertaking of great importance, Captain Colin's battleship is taking the exiled King Carl back to his country in an attempt to help him reclaim his throne. The mood is lightened by the king's luminous new bride, but a mild flirtation between the captain and the queen soon turns to a love that is seemingly impossible!

Appearing at the height of his fame, Dracula star David Manners – dubbed 'the handsomest man in Hollywood' – made his British film debut in this polished Ruritanian romance, playing opposite Norwegian silent-era star Greta Nissen and German émigré Camilla Horn (Faust).

Based on Horton Giddy's play Contraband, The Luck of a Sailor is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its original theatrical aspect ratio, and will be released on UK DVD on 2nd May 2016 at the RRP of £9.99, courtesy of Network’s ‘The British Film’ collection.

Street of Shadows (1953)

Luigi, the owner of a Soho gaming club, falls for Barbara, a beautiful socialite whose husband is a compulsive gambler. As their romance blossoms Luigi finds his former girlfriend murdered – with the evidence pointing in Barbara's direction. Under suspicion and on the run, he must find someone to help him before his luck runs out for good.

Cesar Romero (Ocean’s 11) gives a memorable performance as a Soho club owner who romances Kay Kendall's (Les Girls) unhappily married society girl in this taut Brit-noir thriller from the early 1950s.

With impressive supporting performances from Egypt-born femme fatale Simone Silva (The Shadow Man) and noted British character actor Victor Maddern (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), Street of Shadows is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio.

Street of Shadows will be released on UK DVD on 9th May 2016 at the RRP of £9.99, courtesy of Network’s ‘The British Film’ collection.
