Farewell Again and The Jessie Matthews Revue: Vol 5 on DVD in January

12 December 2015

Network have announced a further two titles in their ongoing 'The British Film' collection: Farewell Again, a 1937 drama starring Leslie Banks and Oscar-nominee Flora Robson; The Jessie Matthews Revue Volume 5, the next volume of films starring musical film star Jessie Matthews featuring Gangway (1937) and Climbing High (1938).

Farewell Again (1937)

Farewell Again joins a regiment of the 23rd Royal Lancers on the happy occasion of a long-awaited reunion with loved ones back in Southampton – and charts the consequences of an unexpected order which sees them forced to return to duty in the Near East just hours later.

By turns humorous, poignant and dramatic, this exceptionally popular film was made with the assistance of the War Office and proved a box-office hit on its original 1937 release and re-released twice more during wartime.

Starrng Oscar-nominee Flora Robson (Black Narcissus, Saratoga Trunk) and Leslie Banks (The Man Who Knew Too Much, Henry V) and featuring an early performance from Robert Newton (Odd Man Out, Oliver Twist), Farewell Again will be released on UK DVD on 18th January 2016 at the RRP of £9.99, courtesy of Network’s ‘The British Film’ collection.

The Jessie Matthews Revue Volume 5

Throughout the 1930s Jessie Matthews was Britain’s best-loved musical film star, her dynamism and gamine charm captivating audiences on both sides of the Atlantic in a string of box-office hits.

Gangway (1937)
On the trail of 'Sparkle', an international jewel thief, Inspector Bob Deering meets Patricia, a young reporter obtaining journalistic titbits about a film star by pretending to be her maid. When she accepts Bob's invitation for an evening out, she triggers a chain of events that make everyone assume that she is the elusive felon.

Climbing High (1938)
Heading a stellar cast, Jessie Matthews plays Diana, a young woman who works at a West End modelling agency. There she meets handsome playboy Nicky, who uses a pseudonym to obtain modelling work simply to be near to her. Diana's aristocratic rival is Lady Constance, who has her sights set on Nicky's money – and has no qualms in using every means at her disposal to get it!

Showcasing some the era’s finest cinema talent – including director and comedy star (and Matthews’ husband) Sonnie Hale (Evergreen, The Phantom Strikes) and legendary art director Alfred Junge (The Man Who Knew Too Much, Goodbye, Mr Chips) – the two films on this volume are presented as transfers from the original film elements, in their as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratios.

The Jessie Matthews Revue Volume 5 will be released on UK DVD on 18th January 2016 at the RRP £12.99, courtesy of Network’s ‘The British Film’ collection.
