Having made a serious splash with his early features as director, Heartbeats and Laurence Anyways, young director/actor Xavier Dolan (he was just 21 when he directed and starred in Heartbeats) has scored another critical hit with his latest, the 2014 Mommy, starring Anne Dorval, Suzanne Clément and Antoine-Olivier Pilon.
A passionate widowed single mom (Anne Dorval) finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her unpredictable 15-year-old ADHD son (Antoine Olivier Pilon). As they struggle to make ends meet, Kyla (Suzanne Clément), the peculiar new neighbour across the street, offers her help. Together, they strive for a new sense of balance.
Described as "Outrageous and brilliant" by The Guardian, while CineVue had this to say of the film: "For years Dolan has been "one to watch", a young man of great promise. With Mommy, that promise has been fully realised."
Mommy will be released on UK DVD (no Blu-ray?) on 20th July 2015 by Metrodome at the RRP of £19.99.
