4 from the British TV archives on DVD in September from Simply Media

14 August 2014

Simply Media have announced the September DVD release of four titles from the archives of UK television: Not In Front Of The Children, all surviving episodes of the classic "lost" sitcom starring Wendy Craig; Angels: The Complete Second Series, the second instalment of the ground-breaking medical drama; the acclaimed 1977 BBC military documentary The Secret War; and Warship: Series 1, ground-breaking naval drama co-produced by the BBC and the Royal Navy.

At present we do not have an RRP of any of the titles here, and no extra features have been announced.

Not in Front of the Children

Not In Front Of The Children is the first sitcom in which Wendy Craig played a harassed and scatter-brained mother of a young and unruly middle-class family. It was such a success, she would go on to play similar housewife roles in the later series And Mother Makes Three and forge her way into the nation's hearts as the matriarch of the family in Carla Lane's hugely successful Butterflies.

Here she is Jennifer Corner, married to art teacher Henry (played by Paul Daneman and later Ronald Hines), battling the everyday challenges of bringing up their three young children. Of the 4 series and 38 episodes that were made, only 8 now survive, all presented together here for the first time.

From the pitfalls of offering moral guidance to your children, to the upheaval of a new baby arriving, and finally a move to a new country home. Jennifer Corner must hold her family together through crises both trivial and serious.

Wendy Craig won a Best Actress BAFTA for her iconic portrayal of the struggling but much-loved mum in this ground-breaking and hilarious BBC comedy which first broadcast in 1967.

This 2-disc set will be released on UK DVD on 8th September 2014 by Simply Media.

Angels: The Complete Second Series

The hard-working nurses of St Angela's Hospital are back, in the second series of Paula Milne's ground-breaking medical drama.

After the huge success of the first series, the student nurses return to face a new set of challenges, both in their working hospital lives and at home. The show continues to tackle the real-life issues that face the medical profession, and is not afraid to deal with the hard-hitting aspects of hospital care or face up to controversial personal issues.

Angels is critically acclaimed for being the first authentic and gritty portrayal of the lives of modern NHS staff, paving the way for later harder-edged medical dramas such as Casualty, Holby City and A&E. It helped launch the careers of numerous British actresses at a time when strong female roles were rare, including Fiona Fullerton, Lesley Dunlop and Julie Dawn Cole. Series 2, first broadcast in 1976, also marks the first appearance of Pauline Quirke as Nurse Vicky Smith.

This 4-disc set will be released on UK DVD on 8th September 2014 by Simply Media.

The Secret War: The Complete Original Series

During the six long years of World War 2, behind the fighting forces, there was another war... a secret war... fought by scientists and engineers.

Produced by the BBC in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum The Secret War lifts the veil of secrecy on the crucial role science and intelligence played behind the lines in winning World War 2. Presented by William Woollard (Top Gear, Tomorrow's World) and largely based on the book Most Secret War by Reginald Victor Jones (key consultant and interviewee of the series) it first aired in 1977 to critical acclaim.

This insightful and revealing documentary series covers the rivalry of the British and the Germans as they struggled to create a winning edge with innovations from radio navigation to naval mines and missiles. Each technology is investigated in thorough scientific detail. Yet throughout, it is the triumph of the human spirit that sets this series apart. The focus is on the science, but the heroism of the everyday individual fighting against the odds through those terrible times shines through.

This 2-disc set will be released on UK DVD on 8th September 2014 by Simply Media.

Warship: Series 1

Warship is the hugely popular naval drama series produced by the BBC in close collaboration with the Royal Navy, examining the working lives of Royal Marines at sea.

The HMS Hero is captained by Commander Nialls (Donald Burton) and features David Savile and James Cosmo among the crew. The series focuses on the professional and personal lives of all crew members, from Captain right down to the lower decks, as they travel the world on tours of duty and tackle dangerous seafaring missions.

Launching in 1973, Warship broke new ground by blurring the edge between drama and documentary. Real life members of the Royal Marine Commandos mix with the cast aboard fully operational naval vessels. Writer (and Royal Navy Officer) Ian Mackintosh teamed up with producer Anthony Coburn who wanted to create a series "that would do for the Navy what Z-Cars had done for the Police".

This 3-disc set will be released on UK DVD on 15th September 2014 by Simply Media.
