Coming to UK DVD in July from Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment, The Square details the incredible sacrifices made by a group of Egyptian activists as they battle regimes and risk their lives during the revolution, giving us a personal view of the conflict from the ground since the country’s overthrow of a 30 year dictatorship in 2011.
The Egyptian Revolution has been an ongoing roller coaster. Through the news, we only get a glimpse of the bloodiest battle, an election, or a million man march. At the beginning of August 2013, we witnessed the second president deposed within the space of three years.
The Square is a truly immersive experience, transporting the viewer deeply into the intense emotional drama and personal stories behind the news. It is the inspirational story of young people claiming their rights, struggling through multiple forces: from a brutal army dictatorship willing to crush protestors with military tanks, to corrupt a Muslim Brotherhood using mosques to manipulate voters.
Directed by Jehane Noujaim, whose impressive track record includes Startup.com (2001) and Control Room (2004), The Square was described by Little White Lies as "a staggering, close-quarters chronicle of the triple-pronged revolutionary uprising that took place in Cairo, Egypt between 2011 and 2013 and saw the enforced deposition of two heads of state and a military interim government through bloody-minded clandestine grass roots action." Winner of a string of international awards, including the Audience Award at Sundance, the film was also nominated for the Best Feature Documentary at this year's Academy Awards.
The Square will be released on UK DVD on 14th July 2014 by Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment at the RRP of £17.99.
