Two friends who grew up together in an orphanage are reunited after years apart. One has taken orders while the other wants them to both relocate to a new life in Germany. However, their relationship and sexuality gradually tears apart the tight-knit fabric of the sect, resulting in a terrifying act that would send a shockwave through the church.
Beyond the Hills (Dupa dealuri) is a mysterious, enthralling and astonishingly accomplished new film from Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days) was awarded both the Best Actress and Best Screenplay awards at Cannes 2012 for its depiction of a real life tragedy that unfolded in a small religious community in Romania.
As with its Palme D'Or-winning predecessor, Beyond the Hills has been widely acclaimed, described by Nivk Roddick in Sight & Sound as a "measured and powerful monastery drama," by Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian as "chilling, bizarre and mysterious," and by Philip French in The Observer as "a painful and exacting picture that confirms [Cristi Puiu's] position as a film-maker of the first rank."
Beyond the Hills will be released on UK Blu-ray and DVD on 10 June 2013 by Artificial Eye at the RRP of £19.99 for the Blu-ray and £15.99 for the DVD.
