If you're looking for a British comedy that's as silly as it is inspired, you could do worse than nip back a few decades and hunt out The Last Remake of Beau Geste, a 1977 film written and directed by and starring one of our more singular comedy talents, the goggle-eyed surrealist Marty Feldman.
Digby Geste (Feldman) is the supposedly 'identical' twin brother of Beau Geste (a dashingly handsome Michael York, whose smile is so bright the light glints off of his teeth) but lacks his sibling's do-or-die heroics. When a priceless family heirloom is stolen the fates of the two brothers are sealed.
Uneven in places but genuinely hilarious in others, The Last Remake of Beau Geste was the first of only two features directed by Feldman (the other was the 1980 In God We Tru$t) and features a supporting cast to die for, including Ann-Margret, Peter Ustinov, James Earl Jones, Trevor Howard, Henry Gibson, Terry-Thomas, Roy Kinnear, Spike Milligan, Hugh Griffith, Irene Handl, Sinéad Cusack and the wonderful Burt Kwouk.
The Last Remake of Beau Geste will be released for the first time on UK DVD on 24th January 2011 by Second Sight at the RRP of £15.99. Hopes that there might be some extra features appear to be in vain. |
