Following the commercial success of Paranormal Activity, the quest to relaunch the American horror film as something that doesn't just regurgitate films from the past or across the water continues with The Last Exorcism, another camcorder horror inspired faux-documentary, this one following the...well, the title's a bit of a giveaway, isn't it.
After a career spent helping the devout through prayer and trickery, Reverend Marcus (Patrick Favian) invites a film crew to document his final fraudulent days as an exorcist. Soon his faith is truly tested when a desperate plea from the father of a possessed girl (Ashley Bell) brings him face to face with evil itself.
Produced by Eli Roth (with a number of others - what do all these producers do) and directed by Daniel Stamm of the highly regarded 2008 film A Necessary Death, the film certainly has its fans in the horror community but has also caught some critical flack for being unfocussed and meandering. Missed this one at the cinema so we'll see how it pans out in the living room.
