You've probably heard of this one by now, or at least you should have. The directorial debut of actor Casey Affleck (Ben's younger brother) documents a tumultuous year in the life of internationally acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix, following the Oscar-nominee as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip-hop musician. Defying expectations, the film deftly explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.
Or does it? Taken at face value on its initial release and reviewed by many as a straight documentary, others were suspicious that the whole thing was a persuasively engineered hoax, something that was settled in September when the director confirmed that...well, you can either look it up for yourself or wait until you see it to make up your own mind. Either way, it's an intriguing if indulgent piece with an inevitably famous face-peppered cast that includes Affleck himself, David Letterman, Edward James Olmos, Ben Stiller and, of course, Joaquin Phoenix.
