Two brilliant young scientists engineer a brand new species within the confines of their laboratory. Rebel superstars of the scientific world, the pair revel in their success as the new creature continues to gain them attention and notoriety. However, unbeknown to their peers, the scientists introduced human DNA into the experiment and the creature they have created is both greater than the sum of its parts and much more unpredictable as a result.
The pair believes that the animal-human hybrid is a step up the evolutionary ladder but the creature undergoes a final, shocking metamorphosis. Suddenly their lives and the lives of everyone around them are thrown into danger as the previously obedient creation threatens to destroy the very people who created her.
Splice has quite a genre pedigree, being directed by Vincenzo Natali, the man behind cult favourite Cube, and executive produced by non other than Guillermo del Toro, the film stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley and was photographed by award-winning cinematographer Tetsuo Nagata (La Vie en Rose), and was described seductively on Eye for Film as "an utterly demented, yet gripping, tale of boy meets girl, meets science, meets DNA, meets secret experiment, meets Hammer horror, meets Mary Shelley, meets Oedipus, meets bestiality, meets The Fly 2." Gets our vote.
Splice will be released on UK DVD (£17.99) and a double-play Blu-ray and DVD pack (£23.99) on 29th November 2010 by Optimum Home Entertainment. The extra features have yet to be confimred, but the press release suggests they will be "fascinating." Let's hope so. You can watch the trailer below.
