For 15 months filmmakers Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger lived with the soldiers of Second Platoon on the remote outpost of Restrepo (named for fallen comrade Medic Juan Restrepo) in Afghanistan, shadowing their every move, living in close quarters with the service men. The resulting footage is intimate and raw, as close to real life soldiering as it gets. Told exclusively from the eyes of the servicemen, Restrepo chronicles the story of the soldiers from combat to death to the boredoms and frustrations of survival.
Restrepo was the Grand Jury Winner at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and has attracted a great deal of critical acclaim, being described by Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian as "A scary, moving and troubling film," and by Mark Dinning in Empire as "Powerful, terrifying and soulful, this real-life Hurt Locker is an intimate, often brilliant insight into combat and comradeship."
The directors have described the film as such:
"The war in Afghanistan has become highly politicized, but soldiers rarely take part in that discussion. Our intention was to capture the experience of combat, boredom and fear through the eyes of the soldiers themselves. Their lives were our lives: we did not sit down with their families, we did not interview Afghans, we did not explore geopolitical debates. Soldiers are living and fighting and dying at remote outposts in Afghanistan in conditions that few Americans back home can imagine. Their experiences are important to understand, regardless of one's political beliefs. Beliefs can be a way to avoid looking at reality. This is reality."
- Restrepo will be released on UK DVD on 6th December by Dogwoof at the RRP of £14.99. Extra features will include (to be confirmed):
- Trailer;
- Additional soldier interviews;
- Deleted scenes;
- Where Are They Now Featurette.
