A tricky one this, a remake of one of the great New York movies of the past thirty years, but one directed by one of the great modern filmmakers. From the moment it was announced the divisions set in, splitting those who simply could not imagine anyone remaking Abel Ferrara's searing 1992 original from those excited by what maverick director Werner Herzog might do with the same and a new location: New Orleans. It didn't help that Nicholas Cage was playing the lead, given that he'd already starred in horrible remakes of The Wicker Man and Bangkok Dangerous. But he also starred in Bringing Out the Dead, one of the great unsung New York movies, so who knows?
Here Cage stars as Terrence McDonagh, a New Orleans cop caught firmly on the cusp between good and bad. Having bravely taken part in a rescue that has left him in permanent pain, McDonagh is now a slave to the drugs that alleviate his condition. A dysfunctional relationship with coke-using hooker Frankie (Eva Mendes) and a habit spiralling out of control forces McDonagh to team up with local drug lord Big Fate (Alvin 'Xzibit' Joiner) as he moves further and further away from the line he once vowed to protect at all costs. The film also stars Val Kilmer, and features Jennifer Coolidge and Brad Dourif in support roles.
Bad Lieutenant (originally titled Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans) will be released on UK DVD and Blu-ray on 27th september by Lionsgate at the RRP of £17.99 for the DVD and £24.99 for the Blu-ray. The press release claims there are a 'wealth' of extra features, but so far has only listed the following:
- Interviews with the cast and crew;
- Making-of featurette.
