Inspired by the true reports of human trafficking rings in Toronto during the latter half of this decade, Sweet Karma is a sexy and violent femme-revenge action-thriller with a gritty 1970s exploitation movie vibe that recalls cult classics such as Ms. 45 and They Call Her One Eye as well as more contemporary examples of the genre such as Nikita and Kill Bill.
Directed by first-time feature director Andrew Thomas Hunt and starring Canadian-born model Shera Bechard (winner of the Next Wave Best Actress Award at Austin's annual international Fantastic Fest in 2009 for her performance in the film) in her acting debut, Sweet Karma tells the fictional story of a young, mute Russian woman who turns scantily-clad vigilante to avenge the apparent abuse and murder of her sister at the hands of a ruthless gang of Russian mobsters.
Shy and mute, Karma Balint (Bechard) is a young, attractive Russian woman who is left alone when her sister Anna (Patricia Stasiak) signs up to become a housemaid in Canada with hopes of living a better life abroad and earning some money for them both. But after seeing her sister off to the airport, Karma never hears from her sister again until she later learns that Anna's body has been found dumped in woods in Southern Ontario, the apparent victim of a Russian mob execution. Determined to discover the truth behind her sister's murder and to exact bloody revenge on those responsible, Karma follows Anna's trail to the sleazy strip joints, lap dancing clubs and call girl parlours of Toronto where she comes face to face with some of the most vicious and deadly elements of the city's criminal underground.
Sweet Karma will be released on DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment on 13th September 2010 t the RRP of £15.99. No extras have been listed. |
