The willful Miss Jean Brodie ignores the rigid curriculum at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls and instead focuses on the mysteries of love, politics and art. As Miss Jean exhorts her girls to follow their hearts and never to lose their youthful exuberance and idealism, an unwavering bond between teacher and pupils is born. But when romantic entanglements with her colleagues and her libertarian politics place her job in jeopardy, Miss Brodie's eccentric morals are put to the test.
Adapted from Muriel Spark's novel and Jay Presson Allen's stage play, and directed by Ronald Neame (The Poseidon Adventure), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is the story of a flamboyant and unconventional school teacher in 1930s Edinburgh. Maggie Smith – now Dame Maggie Smith, of course – won both an Oscar and a BAFTA for her mesmerising performance as Brodie, and is well supported by a cast that includes Celia Johnson as the disapproving headmistress, Robert Stephens and Gordon Jackson as the men in Smith's life,
and Pamela Franklin as the pupil who turns on her.
