Based on the legendary true story of Commander Guy Gibson and his men, The Dam Busters (1955) captures all the thrilling action and suspense of the magnificent exploits of a young squadron charged with taking out the impenetrable Ruhr river dams of Germany with an ingeniously designed bouncing bomb.
Restored and available on Blu-ray for the first time, the discs also feature a brand new documentary based around interviews with the last remaining survivors of the daring raid. Written and directed by Matt Richards (The Brits Who Fought For Spain, Extraordinary People), The Dam Busters – 617 Squadron Remembers is presented by renowned historian Max Arthur, author of The Dam Busters: An Oral History.
Scientist Dr Barnes Wallis (Michael Redgrave) believes WWII can be shortened, by building bombs to destroy the Ruhr dams - thus paralysing the enemy's industrial nerve centre. As permission is granted to manufacture the bombs, a special squadron is put together to carry out the raids on the dams.
Led by dashing Air Ace Wing Commander Guy Gibson (Richard Todd), the squadron begin intense training in order to master the modified bombers they will pilot in the raid. Unaware of their target until the day of their mission, the brave airmen set out on their dangerous and hazardous mission, which could change the course of the War. Back in the Group Ops room, Wallis tensely awaits news of the mission… Did his plan succeed and will the planes all return unscathed?
The Dam Busters: Special Edition will be released on DVD and Blu-ray by Optimum Home Entertainment on 14th June 2010 at the RRP of £15.99 for the DVD and £19.99 for the Blu-ray.
