Bullitt director Peter Yates' outstanding cult classic cycling movie Breaking Away received huge acclaim on its original release earning awards and accolades galore including five Oscar nominations, taking the prize for Best Original Screenplay in 1979 along with a BAFTA and a Golden Globe award. It's also a personal favourite of two particular reviewers on this very site. Just mention the word 'Cutters' to them and watch what happens. See the film to understand the reference.
Starring Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley, Breaking Away tells the tale of four friends in small town America as they graduate from high school uncertain about what their futures hold. Dave (Christopher) has a passion for cycling and he dreams of becoming a world champion, like his Italian idols. He fantasises about escaping his life and goes as far as pretending to be Italian to realise his dream, a habit that drives his father (an excellent Paul Dooley) to distraction.
Although disillusioned when he finally gets to race against his heroes, Dave's cycling passion takes on new meaning when he and his friends face a team from the local college in the town's annual bike race, the Little 500. Faced with a team of students who feel superior to him and his friends, Dave faces the greatest challenge of his life, which will push his endurance and spirit to the limit.
The plot may not sound anything special, but Breaking Away really is one of the best American films of the late 1970s, a wonderfully observed coming-of-age story built around the most unlikely of movie subjects – cycle racing has never seemed so appealing – and featuring a terrific young cast and an unsentimental outsider's view of small-town America.
Breaking Away will be released on UK DVD for the first time ever on 28th June 2010 by Second Sight at the RRP of £15.99. No extras have been listed. |
