Rosenthal and Korda on DVD in April

10 March 2010

Network continue their trawl through the treasure trove of UK TV and cinema of years past and have announced a welcome further set of DVD releases for April, the TV plays Another Sunday and Sweet FA and Ready When You Are, Mr McGill, and the Alexander Korda produced The Divorce of Lady X.

Another Sunday and Sweet FA (1972)

"What we're about to witness is called a football match. Not the beginning of World War Three. Not the destruction of the human race. A football match!"

Every weekend, long-suffering referee Mr. Armistead wades into the melee to try to teach two sets of testosterone-fuelled maniacs the value of restraint, justice and fair play. Why does he persist in this near-futile endeavour? Is it because he has a dangerously masochistic streak? Or is it because Mr Armistead genuinely believes that he can use his peaceful philosophy of life to tame the wilder excesses of the players of Co-op Albion and, on this occasion, the Parker Street Depot?

Another Sunday and Sweet FA, originally transmitted in 1972 as part of Granada's celebrated Sunday Night Theatre anthology, was written by multiple BAFTA winner Jack Rosenthal – one of Britain's most consistently successful television dramatists – and directed by the internationally renowned Michael Apted (7Up, The World Is Not Enough). Taking a ref's-eye view of the life-or-death drama of match day, Another Sunday and Sweet FA is laden with Rosenthal's characteristically insightful humour and features excellent performances from a cast that includes David Swift (Drop the Dead Donkey), David Bradley (Harry Potter) and Coronation Street stars Fred Feast and Anne Kirkbride.

Ready When You Are, Mr. McGill (1976)

It is a momentous day in the life of film extra Joe McGill. He has finally been given one crucial line in a television fi lm. One line that could give him the big break he has been longing for, and lead to the fulfi lment of his life-long ambition to become a professional actor... if he can survive the on-set chaos!

This feature-length drama was first screened in 1976 as part of Granada's Red Letter Day anthology series, and has all the wry humour and warmth we have come to associate with writer Jack Rosenthal. Directed by BAFTA-winning Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral), comedian Joe Black makes his real-life TV debut as Joe McGill, and Jack Shepherd received a BAFTA nomination for his role as harassed director Phil Parish; several Coronation Street regulars also appear among the supporting cast.

The Divorce of Lady X (1938)

This light-hearted society comedy from the Alexander Korda Library features three great actors early in their careers: Korda's wife-to-be Merle Oberon, Laurence Olivier, and Ralph Richardson. Adapted by Lajos Biró from the 1933 stage play Counsel's Opinion, The Divorce of Lady X is a solidly produced 'screwball whimsy' in which Korda used an early threestrip Technicolor technique masterfully to give the film its particular lustre.

The beautiful Leslie (Merle Oberon), a costume party guest, and handsome divorce lawyer Everard Logan (Laurence Olivier) find themselves stranded by fog in an already overcrowded hotel. Leslie's solution is to commandeer Logan's bedroom, relegating him to the sofa, eat his breakfast and sneak off leaving only a note: 'Goodbye, Lady X'. The next day she overhears Logan making disparaging remarks about women in divorce cases and decides that with the aid of her friends Lord and Lady Mere (Ralph Richardson and Binnie Barnes) and an elaborate ruse, she will teach the misogynist a lesson...

Another Sunday and Sweet FA, Ready When You Are, Mr. McGill and The Divorce of Lady X will be released on UK DVD on 5th March 2010 by Network at the RRP of £9.99 for Another Sunday and Sweet FA and Ready When You Are, Mr McGill and £12.99 for The Divorce of Lady X. No extras are listed for any of the titles.
