William Garrow is a campaigning counsel, a battling barrister in the classic mould, fighting injustice in the British courts. But Garrow is no run of the mill legal eagle with a heart and a conscience – he was among the first. For the ground-breaking 18th century barrister was a true pioneer when it came to standing up for the underprivileged and the wronged in the notoriously harsh criminal courts of the time. The real-life Garrow made his name in the Old Bailey as a counsel for the accused at a time when prisoners were rarely represented in court, while his cross-examination skills helped establish the adversary trial system as it is known today. This was a time when corruption ruled and an accused person's guilt depended on how wealthy they were. Garrow was one of the few who championed the rights of the poor and stood up for them in court, using rigorous cross-examination, a ploy rarely used by defence lawyers.
Garrow's Law stars Andrew Buchan (Cranford, The Fixer) in the title role, alongside Alun Armstrong (Little Dorrit, New Tricks) as Garrow's sidekick Southouse and Lyndsey Marshal (Rome). The series was created by Tony Marchant (Holding On) based on real-life documents and cases from the Old Bailey in 18th century London. With cases including murder, assault, corruption and highway robbery, and the pressures brought upon Garrow from the judge's bench before him and the King's ministers behind, Garrow's Law makes for an intriguing blend of courtroom drama and social history.
Garrow's Law will be released on a 2-disc DVD in the UK from Acorn Media on 4th January 2010 at the RRP of £19.99. Special Features include a specially made behind the scenes featurette filmed on location with cast and crew.
