The Jacques Tati Collection on DVD in November

8 October 2009

The BFI have announced three DVD box sets for release in November, the first of which is The Jacques Tati Collection. Jacques Tati is celebrated as much for his ground-breaking direction as for his keenly observed comic performances, and this collectable box set brings together five of Tati's greatest films, from his debut feature, Jour de fête, to his last screen work, Parade.

Jour de fête
A hilarious exposé of the modern obsession of with speed and efficiency, Jacques Tati's award winning feature début is a dazzling blend of satire and slapstick.

Les Vacances de M. Hulot
The film that brought Tati international acclaim also launched his on-screen alter ego: the courteous, well-meaning, eternally accident-prone Monsieur Hulot. Special features are:

  • Interview with filmmaker Richard Lester.

Mon Oncle
Tati's third feature is a satirical assault on the twin targets of efficiency and the modern world.  Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Playtime
Regarded by many as Tati's masterpiece, Playtime is a surreal comic vision of mankind's battle against the overwhelming depersonalisation of modern life. Extra features are:

  • Feature commentary by film historian Philip Kemp;
  • Short documentary Au-delà de Playtime;
  • Continuity supervisor Sylvette Baudrot on Tati and Playtime;
  • Director biography and short film about Tati.

Parade
Tati's last film sees his return to the boisterous music hall world in which he began his career as a mime artist in the 1930s. Extra features:

  • Interview with Jacques Tati, filmed in London (1977, 19 mins).

The Jacques Tati Collection will be released by the BFI on 2nd November 2009 at the RRP of £39.99. Further box sets to come later in November are The Terence Davies Collection and The Film Noir Collection. Full details to follow soon.
