In the enigmatically titled Sleep Furiously, documentary filmmaker Gideon Koppel paints a fascinating portrait of life in the small Welsh farming community in which he grew up, whose long-standing and traditional way of life is now in gradual decline. Featuring a rare score by The Aphex Twin, this is no fly-on-the-wall observational piece, but an elegy, a cinematic musing on the landscape and community and changing times, one that has attracted considerable praise, particularly for its visual beauty, its humanity, and its moments of unexpected humour.
Described by filmmaker Alex Cox in Total Film as "visually remarkable," critic Marc Cousins as "pure cinema: visually alert, brilliantly musical, and moving in the way it captures time passing and lives lost," and John Banville in Sight and Sound as "a masterpiece," Sleep Furiously has been announced for a UK DVD release on 5th October 2009 by New Wave Films at the RRP of £19.99. The disc features Dolby stereo 2.0 and 5.1 audio options and the following extras:
- A Sketchbook for 'The Library Van' (56:48);
- Trailer (1:32).
