With Spanish cinema favourite Pedro Almodóvar's latest Broken Embraces (Los abrazos rotos) just a month away from its UK release, Optimum Hme Entertainment are to release his 1991 film High Heels (Tacones lejanos) on UK DVD for the first time.
High Heels is a touching and funny melodrama in which Marisa Paredes (Talk to Her, The Devil's Backbone, Life is Beautiful, All About My Mother) plays Becky de Paramo, a woman who abandoned her daughter Rebecca, aged 13, to concentrate on her career as a pop singer. Brought up by her father and now a successful TV anchorwoman, Rebecca (Victoria Abril – Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, Law of Desire, Kika) nonetheless remains obsessed with her absent mother, even marrying one of her former lovers, Manuel (Feodor Atkine – Henry & June, Central Station). When Becky has a concert in Madrid, mother and daughter meet up for the first time in 15 years with disastrous results.
Winner of a number of international awards and nominated for a good many more, High Heels nonetheless never found quite the international audience that his earlier Matador (1986) and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, 1988) enjoyed, nor the worldwide attention that his post Live Flesh (Carne trémula, 1997) films have attracted. Thus the chance to see the film on UK DVD is welcome, when it arrives on 17th August 2009 from Optimum Home Entertainment at the RRP of £16.99. At present there is no news of any extra features.
