British 60s comedy double in July

9 July 2009

Network Releasing have announced the UK DVD release for later this month of two lesser seen British films that share a light-hearted approach to their chosen genres, the satirical spy thriller Hot Enough for June and the comedy romance with a space adventure slant, Man in the Moon.

In Hot Enough for June (1960), struggling young writer, Nicholas Whistler (Dirk Bogarde), is sent on a seemingly innocent commercial assignment behind the Iron Curtain. On his arrival in Prague, everyone – including his beautiful chauffeuse, Vlasta – believes the Czech-speaking Nicholas to be a spy. It takes much time and adventure for him to realise it, but when he eventually discovers that he has been plunged into the world of international espionage, he is numb with horror. With his contacts gone, he is on his own, and must escape arrest and flee to England. But the secret police are close behind him...

Dirk Bogarde stars as replacement agent number 008 opposite Yugoslavian-born screen siren Sylva Koscina in this satirical Cold War comedy-thriller. Directed by Ralph Thomas (The Clouded Yellow, Above Us the Waves), scripted by Lukas Heller (The Dirty Dozen, The Flight of the Phoenix) and produced by the prolific and highly successful Betty Box (The Clouded Yellow, Doctor in the House), it features a cast of familiar faces including Robert Morley, Leo McKern, Derek Fowlds, John Junkin, John Le Mesurier and Derek Nimmo, as well as uncredited appearances from Norman Bird and Frank Finlay.

Hot Enough for June will be released on UK DVD on 20th July 2009 by Network aat the RRP of £9.99. The only extra features are three image galleries, including behind the scenes and publicity shots.

In the 1964 Man in the Moon, Kenneth More (Reach for the Sky) is Mr. Normal, William Blood, yet he is at the same time very strange. He appears to have an inability to worry and to become ill. This strange physical phenomenon allows him to make a living working as a human guinea pig. Perhaps inevitably, fate comes a-calling during one particular assignment, when he chances upon a beautiful woman running to the railway station. But surely he is also immune to the charms of women... or so he thought.

As he bumps into the young lady, Polly again, he is also on the verge of being sent to the moon, since a team of NASTI scientists do not wish to risk the lives of experienced and well-trained astronauts. But this time, William realises that there might just be the beginning of a totally new kind of “illness” developing within himself...

Shirley Anne field (Saturday Night and Sunday Morning) also delivers a fine performance in this madcap sci-fi comedy penned by the multi-award winning Bryan Forbes (The League of Gentlemen, Séance on a Wet Afternoon) and Michael Relph (The Ship That Died of Shame) and directed by Basil Dearden (The Blue Lamp, The League of Gentlemen). A noteworthy supporting cast includes Michael Hordern, Charles Gray, Norman Bird and Noel Purcell.

Man in the Moon will be released on UK DVD on 20th July by Network at the RRP of £9.99. No extra features have been listed.
