Hellraiser Blu-ray in July

6 July 2009

One of the genuinely iconic films of 80s horror cinema and a rare chance to see the reat Andrew Robinson in a lead role, horror author Clive Barker's feature directing debut prompted four sequels and the inevitable unwelcome remake, which has been threatened for 2011. It also gave birth to one of the genre's greatest monsters in Pinhead, a detailed model of whom sits happily in front of my DVD player.

When Frank Cotton (Sean Chapman) solves the mystery of the Lament Configuration puzzle box, he inadvertently opens a doorway to Hell and, in death, enters the world of the Cenobites, a race of sadistic supernatural beings led by Pinhead (Doug Bradley). Brought back from the edge of damnation by the blood of his brother, Larry (Andrew Robinson), Frank rises to feed on the souls of others.

Although it's had a number of DVD releases in the past, including as part of the rather neat Hellriaser Puzzle Box set, the original and best Hellraiser movie is now to be released on which should be the best looking version yet, with Anchor Bay's upcoming Blu-ray edition. Featuring a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack, the following extras have been confirmed:

  • Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Clive Barker & star Ashley Laurence. Moderated by Screenwriter Peter Atkins;
  • Fast Film Facts;
  • Mr Cotton, I Presume? - An Interview with star Andrew Robinson (hoorah!);
