Fireman's Ball in August

12 June 2009

Academy Award winning director Milos Forman made his name on the international film circuit with Fireman's Ball (Horí, má panenko) a hilarious, farcical and dark comedy centering around the retirement party for the chairman of the local fire brigade.

Viewed as a political allegory by the Czechoslvakian Head of State, it was 'banned forever' in Forman's home country, forcing him to move to the USA. Subsequent to his arrival, Forman became one of Hollywood's A-List filmmakers where he directed Academy Award winning films such as One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Amadeus.

In their small-town meeting hall, a maladroit committee of volunteer firefighters holds a ball to celebrate the retirement of one of their own, but thanks to poor planning and lack of leadership, the evening quickly devolves into a catastrophe. Nobody can prevent the lottery prizes from being stolen out from under the very noses of those guarding them. A beauty contest turns into an embarrassing farce, and the brigade can't even respond properly to a real fire next door.

Fireman's Ball will be released on UK DVD on 17th August 2009 by DNC Entertainment at the RRP of £15.99. Special features are restricted to a trailer.
