Jessie Matthews double in May

6 May 2009

Singer Jessie Matthews may be a name unfamiliar to younger modern audiences, but in the 1930s her popularity as a stage singer was almost unrivalled. Eventually and inevitably she made the move to film musicals, two of the most popular being the 1932 There Goes the Bride and the 1934 Evergreen, directed by Victor Saville.

In There Goes the Bride, Jessie Matthews is Annette, the bride of the title. Though young, beautiful and talented, she is, alas, engaged to an unworthy fellow for no more suitable reasons other than money and to fulfil her father's wishes. The unhappy but brave girl makes her escape on the morning of her impending wedding and catches a train to Paris. After a series of events and misadventures including a robbery, resulting in her losing her purse, Annette finds herself in the apartment of a rigidly-mannered, wealthy gentleman Max, who agrees to accommodate her for 24 hours while she rides out the uproar caused by her disappearance. When detectives trace and retrieve the reluctant bride and Max has to let her leave, the otherwise-engaged, severe gentleman has a shocking revelation at his own matters of the heart.

The film features Matthews at her youthful and charming best, Owen Nares proper and unyielding as Max and Carol Goodner suitably indignant as Max's fiancée.

In Evergreen Matthews makes her most enduring movie appearance as the successful, wildly popular Edwardian music hall star Harriet Green. On the eve of her marriage to the Marquis of Staines in 1909, her former lover not only makes a most unwelcomed appearance at the celebration, but also poses her with a threat that she cannot ignore. She is thus forced to flee the country to avoid a scandal whilst leaving her daughter, also named Harriet, in the care of her trusted dresser Hawkie.

Several years pass and young Harriet has grown to become a beautiful young woman. She works at making her way as a musical performer without much success, until she meets publicity man Tommy. With the help of Harriet's mother's best friend Maudie, they cook up a scheme that would rely much upon the resemblance of Harriet and her mother, as well as her gifts as a singer and performer. Of course, in a cut throat world such as this one, no secret lies undiscovered.
