Happily married London-based American insurance executive Steve Blackburn (George Segal) can't seem to avoid bumping into divorced English fashion designer Vicki Allessio (Glenda Jackson) wherever he goes. Finally bowing to the inevitable, the two recognise their growing infatuation for each other and nip off to Spain for a week of uncomplicated sex, but nothing goes quite as planned and on their return the two find they have fallen in love.
What may sound like froth is actually a sharply written (by director Jack Rose and Melvin Frank) and performed comedy of errors, that landed Glenda Jackson a Best Actress Oscar and was nominated for four others, including Best Film, and we're talking back in 1973 when the awards actually seemed to recognise film quality rather than financial success. Actually, given that the film lost out on Best Picture to The Sting, and that the other contenders American Graffiti, The Exorcist and Cries and Whispers I'd like to retract that last statement.
Anyway, A Touch of Class is still a smart, witty and ultimately bittersweet love story and one that rarely seems to get the screenings it deserves these days. Good news then that the film is to be released on UK DVD on 18th May 2009 by Arrow Films at the RRP of £15.99. The only extra feature listed is a trailer.
