Back in the late '80s, Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans whilst unable to sustain any real relationships. Randy lives for the ring, but when he suffers a heart attack, he is forced to retire and re-evaluate his life. But can he resist the lure of the thrills and the adoration of his fans that a show brings?
The Wrestler came as something as a surprise for those familiar with the careers of both director Darren Aronofsky, who had made his name with distinctly non-mainstream works such as Pi, Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain, and leading man Mickey Rourke, whose few years of offbeat stardom were eventually swallowed up by his personal life and his decision to abandon acting for boxing. The acclaim he has received for his role in The Wrestler, plus the numerous awards it has brought him (he was also nominated for an Oscar), has found him much in demand again – he currently has seven films in production or pre-production.
The Wrestler has been announced for a UK DVD and Blu-ray release by Optimum Home Entertainment on 1st June 2009 at the RRP of £19.99 for the DVD and £24.99 for the Blu-ray. The following extras have been confirmed:
- Inside The Ring featurette;
- Interview with Mickey Rourke;
- Theatrical Trailer.
