Catholic Boys is a surprisingly engaging and underrated coming-of-age comedy starring 80's brat-packer Andrew McCarthy (Pretty in Pink, St Elmo's Fire) as Michael Dunn, just 16 and newly dispatched to live with his grandparents in Brooklyn and attend the exalted St Basil's Catholic school for Boys. There he wastes no time in befriending the local misfits, including the class bully, Rooney (Kevin Dillon, Platoon) and one reluctant young monk. Together they begin to rebel and in so doing discover who they really are, with comic results. Along the way Michael also falls for Dani (Mary Stuart Masterton, The Stepford Wives, Bad Girls), the streetwise daughter of the owner of the local hangout. However the repressive leadership at St Basils, headed by the formidable Brother Thadeus (Donald Sutherland, Don't Look Now), will stop at nothing to maintain order and their word is law. If that has to spell the end of Michael and Dani's relationship, then so be it.
Also featuring the underused John Heard as easy-going Brother Timothy, directed by Michael Dinner (who later moved in to television) and featuring a lively Irish folk influenced score by James Horner, Catholic Boys gets is UK DVD premiere when it's released on 6th April 2009 by Optimum Home Entertainment at the RRP of £12.99.
