The Hard Way in March

23 February 2009

No, not the John Badham-directed comedy cop drama from 1991 with James Woods and Michael J. Fox, but a rarely seen TV movie starring the intriguing duo of the Patrick McGoohan and Lee Van Cleef, directed by feature one-timer Michael Dryhurst and executive produced by none other than John Boorman.

The life of the mercenary, we are assured, is both transitory and violent. They roam the world in packs, feeding off obscure political upsets, war and the general shabby consequences of man's appetite for destruction and power. Some, though, are loners. Patrick McGoohan is John Connor, and he is one such man... One of the world's top hit men, he has grown weary of watching men die. The anonymous hotel rooms, wet streets and ever-present fear of a tap on the door in the dead of night have led him to retire and settle down in Ireland. But "The Co-ordinator," played by Hollywood and Spaghetti Western legend Lee Van Cleef has other ideas... A taught thriller with heavyweight performances, the film makes full use of Brian Eno's innovative readymade 'soundtrack' Music for Films.

The Hard Way will be released on UK DVD by Network on 2nd March 2009 at the RRP of £14.99. The picture will be in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio, but no extras have been listed.
