If you're not Australian – and I'm not either – and of a certain age, then you may never have encountered the 1974 movie Stone. It triggered Australia's exploitation explosion, sparked a widespread censorship controversy, and remains one of the most infamous biker movies in genre history. And in April, Stone roars onto UK DVD for the first time. Nihilistic, anti-society, anti-police, anti-business and steeped in counterculture, Stone, we are assured, remains as gritty, shocking and confrontational now as it was 35 years ago.
Stone tells the full-throttle saga of an undercover cop (Ken Shorter), who infiltrates the outlaw Grave Diggers, a biker gang (led by producer/director/co- writer Sandy Harbutt) on a one-way trip to hell with vengeance in their hearts and violence on their minds. Helen Morse (Picnic At Hanging Rock), Bill Hunter (Newsfront, The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert), members of the Sydney Hells Angels, Vincent Gil and Reg Evans (Mad Max) co-star in a down-under cult favourite, now fully restored from original vault elements.
Stone will be released on UK DVD on 20th April 2009 by Severin Films as a 2-disc Special Edition at the RRP of £17.99 with the following extra features:
- Theatrical Trailer;
- Stone Forever – Richard Kuipers' making-of documentary featuring interviews with original Stone cast and crew, and extensive footage of the Stone 25th Anniversary celebration attended by 35,000 bikers in 1998;
- The Making of Stone;
- Stone makeup test;
- Director's Slide Show.
