The cinema of Terence Davies has from its early days been beloved by the British critical establishment, autobiographical tales of his own working class Liverpool background – something you'd otherwise never detect from his accent – made with an arresting and sometimes beautiful cinematic precision. Following the dramatic feature The House of Mirth in 2000, Davies was absent from film production following a number of unrealised projects and rejected proposals, but last year made a triumphant return with the documentary Of Time and City, an ode to his native Liverpool that has wowed audiences and critics alike and was being hailed as the highlight of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival where it received its premiere.

Of Time and the City is an illuminating and heartfelt work, powerfully evoking life in post-war Britain while exploring the nature of love, memory, and the toll that the passing years take on the cities and communities that we cherish. No simple documentary, it is an entrancing piece of autobiographical cinema that reaches far beyond the city in which it is set, weaving a rich tapestry from archive and contemporary footage, music, voice, literary quotation, personal reminiscence and wickedly funny observation. The film landed producers Solon Papadopoulos and and Roy Boulter a BAFTA nomination for The Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Director, Writer or Producer for their First Feature Film.
Of Time and City will be released on UK DVD on 30th March 2009 by the BFI at the RRP of £19.99. The disc will feature an anamorphic 1.77:1 transfer wuth optional English subtitles for the hard of hearing, and the following extras:
