Trail of the Lonesome Pine in March

29 January 2009

Set in the mountains of Kentucky at the turn of the twentieth century, the 1936 Trail of the Lonesome Pine (no relation to that lovely Laurel and Hardy song number) was the fourth film based on the classic novel of the same name by John Fox Jr. and stars Henry Fonda, Sylvia Sidney and Fred MacMurray, and features one of our old favourites Nigel Bruce.

A feud, the origins of which can barely be remembered, has been boiling for decades between two sheltered mountain families, the Tollivers and the Falins. When plans are revealed to build a railroad through both families' land and mine the coal deposits beneath it, enterprising outsider Jack Hale (MacMurray) inadvertently becomes entangled in the region's politics. He soon captures the attention of the beautiful Jane Tolliver (Sydney) and quickly becomes involved in a love triangle with her and her cousin Dave (Fonda).

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song (A Melody From the Sky – no, I can't whistle it either) and winner of a Special Recommendation at the 1936 Venice Film Festival, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, directed by Henry Hathaway (The Sons of Katie Elder, Souls at Sea, True Grit), was the first film shot outside of a studio in three-strip Technicolor and will be released for the first time on UK DVD by Eureka Entertainment on 30th March 2009 at the RRP of £15.99. The film is presented in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. No extras are included.
