Operation Valkyrie - The Stauffenberg Plot to Kill Hitler in January

20 December 2008

Soon to be a major Hollywood movie! If those words don't send a chill through your bones then you're probably a lot more tolerant than we, especially when Tom Cruise is attached as the star. But the director is Bryan Singer, who's proved himself in the fantasy and crime genres, and the supporting cast includes the likes of Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp, Tom Hollander and – are you sure about this? – Eddie Izzard. Funny how fond of British talent the American directors get when they need a few Nazi officers...

The movie in question is Valkyrie (single word titles are so much snappier), but the true story that inspired it has also been covered in documentary form in a film with the slightly less poster-friendly Operation Valkyrie: The Stauffenberg Plot to Kill Hitler. Directed by Jean-Pierre Isbouts and produced in collaboration with the German Resistance Organisation's Memorial Centre, this brand new documentary presents the definitive story of the assassination plot, based on eyewitness accounts and featuring an interview with Philipp Baron von Boeselager, the last surviving member of the Stauffenberg conspiracy.

In July, 1944, as World War II raged on, a group of conspirators led by a German officer, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, plotted to assassinate Hitler and end his reign of terror. The operation took its name from the official codename for an emergency contingency plan, ironically approved by Hitler himself, designed to protect the Nazi regime against the potential threat of internal civil disruption or uprisings during the course of the war. The plan was the brainchild of General Friedrich Olbricht, who served under Home Army Commander General Friedrich Fromm. What very few knew, however, was that Olbricht and Home Army Chief of Staff, Stauffenberg, were secretly transforming Valkyrie into an elaborate plan to kill Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime from the inside.

Using rare colour footage, painstakingly recreated dramatisations, detailed CG reconstructions and exclusive interviews with leading historians, Operation Valkyrie: The Stauffenberg Plot to Kill Hitler takes an in-depth and comprehensive look at what happened before, during and after the pivotal events of July 1944.

Operation Valkyrie: The Stauffenberg Plot to Kill Hitler will be released on UK DVD by Anchor Bay on 26th January 2009 as a two-disc set at the RRP of £12.99. Special features include:
