Written and directed by Juwan Chung (Cake), the hard-hitting contemporary thriller Baby takes an adrenaline-fuelled trip through the streets of East Los Angeles' Asian gangland territory to tell a tragic tale that has been described as an Asian American Boys n the Hood, or so the pre-release PR assures us. We're always a bit cynical about such comparisons and claims, but Film Threat's Jeff Wong was reasonably upbeat, describing it as "an interesting take on one side of the Asian American culture that is rarely seen." OK, so what's it about?
A young, motherless Asian kid with only an alcoholic father to rely upon, Baby's bleak existence in the ganglands of East LA gets worse when, aged just 11 years old, he becomes involved with a group of older gangsters and ends up charged with and convicted of manslaughter after killing a rival. Six years later and freed from prison he returns to the streets, where he struggles to fit into a society that he believes has rejected him. Responding in the only way he knows how, Baby quickly finds his way back to the violent lifestyle of street gangs, robbery, drug dens and murder. His only hopes of salvation lie with his childhood sweetheart and his former best friend, but even they are in danger of being caught up in the tragedy of Baby's life.
Baby will be released on UK DVD by Showbox Home Entertainment on 26th January 2009 at the RRP of £15.99. Special Features include:
- Deleted scenes with optional audio commentary;
- Storyboards.
