On the trail of their first box set of films from American independent Jim Jarmusch, Optimum have announced a second set, again containing three of the director's key works.
Mystery Train (1989) consists of three stories linked by a small Memphis hotel and the spirit of Elvis and features a cast of character actors, some of whose cult stock has increased with the passing of time, including Masatoshi Nagase (The Most Terrible Time in My Life and the various Mike Hama sequels), Tom Noonan (Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter), the inimitable Steve Buscemi and musicians Rufus Thomas, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Tom Waits and Joe Strummer.
Night on Earth (1991) upper the stories to five, this time based around taxi rides in five cities worldwide. Uneven but often a real joy, once again the cast is part of the draw and includes Gena Rowlands, Winona Ryder, Armin Mueller-Stahl (recently so good in Cronenberg's Eastern Promises), Isaach De Bankolé, Roberto Benigni and Giancarlo Esposito.
Finally there's Dead Man, (1995), one of Jarmusch's most infrequently seen but for our money best movies, featuring Johnny Depp as an on-the-run accountant named William Blake who hooks up with an Indin named Nobody (a superb Gary Farmer). Gorgeously shot in black and white, it has a cult cast to die for that includes Crispin Glover, Lance Henriksen, Michael Wincott (one of the best voices in the business), John Hurt, Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Billy Bob Thornton and Alfred Molina.
The Jim Jarmusch Box Set, Volume 2 will be released on UK DVD by Optimum Home Entertainment on 5th January 2009 at the RRP to be confirmed. Extras are:
- Mystery Train: trailer;
- Night on Earth: trailer, interview with Gena Rowlands;
