My Brother's Wedding from the BFI in October

20 September 2008

Pierce is a young man at a crossroads – with few prospects for the future he is torn between his obligations to his hard-working family, aspirational brother and criminally-minded friends.

My Brother's Wedding (1983) is a warm, wry drama from Charles Burnett, its vignettes steeped in the mood and character of the Los Angeles neighbourhoods in which they were shot. Burnett's follow-up to the acclaimed Killer of Sheep, also released on UK DVD by the BFI on the same day as this disc, is presented in a 2-disc set containing both the new director's cut and the original version of this recently rediscovered feature. Transferred in the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and with a PCM stereo soundtrack, the disc has the following features:

  • Exclusive new interview with Charles Burnett;
  • When it Rains (1995), Burnett's short film celebrating the value of community, as a benevolent man helps a neighbour who faces eviction;
  • Quiet as Kept (2007), Burnett's short documentary concerning a former New Orleans family relocated after Hurricane Katrina;
  • Illustrated booklet containing essays, director biography, cast and credits.

My Brother's Wedding will be released on UK DVD by the BFI on 20th October 2008 at the RRP of £17.99.
