The film that launched the Dogme 95 movement and still for our money the finest film to emerge from it, Festen (The Celebration) is now ten years old and the revolution kicked off by the movement has now wormed its way into movies and TV from almost every country. Of course what most have taken from it is the immediacy of the fidgety, hand-held camera style and little seems to have been learned about re-approaching material in a fresh and original way. But I digress.
The celebration of the title brings together the many members of a wealthy extended family to mark the 60th birthday of patriarch Helge. When dusk falls and the master of ceremonies introduces himself to announce that dinner is served, Christian raises his glass to what all the guests believe to be a poignant toast to his father. However, the eldest son's speech serves only to expose a secret that descends the celebration into a tragic and heartbreaking night that will never be forgotten.
Brilliantly directed by Thomas Vinterberg, most convincingly performed and featuring some arresting DV camerawork from ex-pat Dogme regular Anthony Dod Mantle, Festen is a stunning re-invention of the family drama for a more enlightened and cynical age.
Although already available on UK DVD, Festen is to be re-released on 13th October by Metrodome at the RRP of £19.99 to mark the film's 10th Anniversary. The brand new special features will include:
- The Making Of Festen;
- Festen In Retrospect;
- The Disclosure of Festen.
No news on the running times of these yet, but we will update this when we find out.
