Short Eyes in September

4 September 2008

Bruce Davison stars in this brutal prison drama as Clark Davis, a white man convicted of molesting who is sent to 'The Tombs', otherwise known as the Manhattan House of Detention. Infamous for its brutal and ruthless detainees, Davis immediately finds that he is a marked man once inside. Featuring a cast of mostly non-professionals, Sjort Eyes was on its release considered a blistering look at life in one of New York's most dangerous prisons. A 2003 re-release in the USA drew some negative comparisons to the TV series Oz, but times and allowed content have changed a bit since 1977 when Short Eyes was first released in cinemas, and let's face it, what hard-hitting prison drama does have a chance against the mighty Oz? Anyway, it's US DVD release prompted DVD Talk to say of it: "It's like this strange, grim film. Difficult to watch at times but utterly real and completely engrossing." Sounds intriguing at least.

Short Eyes has been announced for a UK DVD release by Metrodome for 22nd September 2008 at the RRP of £15.99. No extras have been confirmed. In an interesting indicator to the continued strength of some of its content, the BBFC have slapped an 18 certificate on the disc.
