No, He Was a Quiet Man not a remake of the John Ford/John Wayne Oirish favourite, but a work that was intriguingly described by Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian as "A real oddity," the very sort of film we rather like here. Christian Slater stars as Bob, a put-upon and bullied nobody whose life is transformed when his spur-of-the-moment plan to slaughter his work colleagues takes an unexpected turn. Part satire, part love story and part comedy, the film is reputed not to quite live up to its fabulous set-up, but does co-star the always wonderful William H. Macy as Bob's oily boss Gene Shelby and word has it that this is Slater's best performance in a long, long time.
In case you missed it on its cinema run, which is rather likely as it happens, then worry not as it's winging our way on DVD in May courtesy of the High Fliers label. No info on screen ratio or sound, and it looks like it's a movie-only disc.
He Was a Quiet Man will be released on UK DVD by High Fliers on 26th May 2008 at a RRP that has yet to be confirmed. The DVD will also be available to rent in advance of the retail release. |
