Over the course of a single
weekend, a
group of young American paratroopers who
are preparing to be shipped out to Vietnam
struggle to come to terms with
their fears and the realities of going to
war. As tension in the barracks escalates
and hostility between the men grows increasingly
extreme, an underlying aggression swells
and the onslaught of violence, even before
setting foot on enemy soil is never far away.
Based on the play by David
Rabe, directed by Robert Altman
and starring a young Matthew
Modine from Full metal Jacket and
Altman's out Short Cuts,
the 1983 Streamers has been described as the flip side of Kubrick's film, set as it is in a camp in which the recruits lounge about and dish out their own pain to each other while the drill sergeants spend most of the time drunk. It's a film that, as so often with Altman, has starkly divided opinion.
Previously unavailable on DVD in the US or UK, Streamers has been announced
for a UK DVD release by Metrodome on 21st April
2008 at the RRP of £15.99. We've not
confirmed this yet, but all the signs are that
this is a movie-only release. |
