The Theo Angelopoulos Collection, Volume 3 on DVD in March

29 February 2012

Theo Angelopoulos is Greece's most celebrated filmmaker and has been acclaimed by British critics Derek Malcolm and David Thompson as one of the world's greatest living directors. His body of work examines the history of modern Greece from a social and political perspective. Following his tragic death while he was working on the shoot of his latest film, Artificial Eye have announced the final volume in their three-part collection of his works. Many of his most well-known and critically acclaimed films are included in this DVD collection, including the Palme d'Or winning Eternity and a Day and his most recent features, The Dust of Time.

Described by Empire as "a major cinematic achievement," Ulysses' Gaze (To vlemma tou Odyssea – 1995) is an epic chronicle a hundred years of Balkan conflict and a highly personal celebration of a century of cinema. The film stars Harvey Keitel as a Greek-American filmmaker who journeys across the turbulent Balkan countries of the 1990s.

The 1998 Eternity and a Day (Mia aioniotita kai mia mera), which The Guardian called "a film of intense poetry and humanity," star Bruno Ganz as a poet nearing the end of his life who undertakes a strange journey in which he attempts to retrieve the lost moments of his life. This beautifully crafted and luminous masterpiece won the Palme d'Or at the 1998 Cannes Film festival.

Trilogy: The Weeping Meadow (Trilogia: To livadi pou dakryzei – 2004) is a sweeping and visually stunning historical epic that tells the story of the forbidden love affair between Alexis and the beautiful Eleni, which takes place against the tumultuous events of World War 2 and the Greek Civil War. The Times called in "a masterly work of art...beautifully shot."

The Dust of Time (Trilogia II: I skoni tou hronou – 2008) continues the story begun in The Weeping Meadow, with Willem Dafoe cast as a Greek-American director making a film about his mother's extraordinary quest to reunite with her husband in America. It's an epic tale that unfolds across continents in the latter half of the twentieth century. Geoff Andrew writing in Time Out described it as "an epic, imaginatively audacious and visually striking meditation on twentieth century history, exile, wandering and love."

The Theo Angelopoulos Collection, Volume 3 will be released on UK DVD as a 4-disc set on 26th March 2012 by Artificial Eye at the RRP of £49.99.

Special features will include:

  • Interview with Theo Angelopoulos (29:10);
