Following the recent unveiling of Sight & Sound's once-a-decade Greatest Films of All Time poll. The British Film Institute is running a season of screenings of the top ten films at the BFI Southbank throughout September and October.
Said Sight & Sound editor Nick James of the poll results:
So here, according to hundreds of critics, historians, curators and programmers from around the world, are the Ten Greatest Films ever made, a programme that covers (or ought to) nearly everything of which the cinema is capable. And somewhere among this selection is the title that these experts have collectively decided is The Greatest Film of All Time (you’ll have to buy the September issue of the magazine to find out exactly where each film has ranked, and which has emerged triumphant). I’m not going to eulogise or describe individual titles here – each is familiar and brilliant in its own way – nor will I mention the near-misses, because this list speaks for itself. What one can say is that these titles are the result of a terrific game, an agony of decision-making that has given sleepless nights to so many passionate cinephiles and made my role feel more like that of a therapist than an editor. We at Sight & Sound are very proud of this ten-yearly task, and we’re confident that – though canons have their detractors and we can (and will) argue to the end of time about what should be in or out of the list – this canon is vital proof that cinema is an art form. Anyone who can take the time to see every one of these films will find a permanent passion for the medium is latent within them.
