High 5
A brief introduction to a new site column in which we list five examples, each personal favourites, from a criteria to be selected on a bi-weekly basis either by us or by you, and we asking you to throw in your own choices too.
27 March 2014

Over the past few months we've been toying with a number of ideas for new columns and features, in part to enable us to post something while we're working on our (over)long reviews, but also to expand our range of our coverage just a little. The recent introduction of Retro Reviews has enabled us to start picking up on discs that we started to review but did not complete, and also offers us the chance to cover favourite films, hopefully from a new angle, without having to wait for a new Blu-ray release for justification.

The one that's been kicking around for the longest time is one we're kind of hoping that you'll also contribute to. What it will consist of is five examples each from the two lead contributors (that could well expand to include others in time) of films or scenes that in our humble view meet a criteria that can be set by either of us, or even by site readers. An example we will be unlikely to use (largely because we tend to favour discussing films that we like rather than those that we don't) might be "Five scenes that made you squirm with embarrassment". Just watch some smart-arse suggest that we cover that next.

The scenes or films that we list are all personal choices and are in no way meant to be read as definitive. They are also gut reactions, responses pulled from memory without the aid of research. Doubtless with each pick we will miss examples that we will be later kicking ourselves for for not including, which is why you're likely to see at least one pick that starts with the words "Five more scenes that..." in the fullness of time.

Which is, of course, where you come in. What we're hoping is that you'll throw in your own suggestions for films or scenes that you'd add to each list if you were drawing one up. You'll be able to Tweet us your suggestions using the #OutsiderHigh5 hashtag, or simply email them through at our main email address (mail@cineoutsider.com) with High 5 as the subject name. If we get enough responses we'll append each of our selections with the best (or perhaps most intriguing) of those sent in by you.

Our first selection should go up later this evening. The criteria for this one selected by Camus, who with his usual enthusiasm responded to my question about when we should launch this section by selecting a topic, choosing his five films and writing them up at a speed that frankly left me reeling. My own response was slower in coming than it should have been, but when I did find the time the examples just kept flowing, and I had trouble whittling the list down to five. And there was not set rule to why I chose the five I did – they were simply the first five that popped into my head, not a top five.

Like I said above, if you have any suggestions for future lists or personal favourites of your own, then do send them in. Personally, I'm hoping these will allow me to discover a few examples in each category that I've not seen before.
